Hateful Paper Turns its Ire on Middle Class

28/08/2023

There was more evidence that the fixation of the right wing Daily Mail newspaper on transgender women is beginning to be replaced by other imaginary adversaries as the moral panic on trans issues begins to collapse under the weight of its own contradictions.  On Monday 7th August, the extremist newspaper, which is noted for its support for German's fascist regime in the run up to the Second World War, suddenly turned its fire on its own middle class heartland, in a bizarre tirade aimed at people in the Home Counties who are fighting developers hell bent on tearing up green and common land.  Perhaps this turn out is not so surprising as the Mail will always back faceless corporations over ordinary people, particularly those that fight back, whom it detests. Back in the 1990's, the popular resistance to the then Tory government's road building programme, saw many middle class people in towns like Newbury and Twyford become involved in radical politics.  The Mail turned on them too with vicious ad hominem attacks.  The paper now seems set to repeat this strategy against a new generation of ecological campaigners.
