Alan Bennett is a hero both for working class northern England and as an icon of our LGBTQ rainbow community. Now eighty six years of age, Mr Bennett shows no signs of stopping his prodigious output of plays and essays. In the last thirty years, Mr Bennett has become much more open about his bisexuality, particularly since a close shave with death in 1997 when he survived cancer. Alan Bennett's work takes centre stage on Monday night on both BBC-1 and BBC Four Television channels. Several episodes of Bennett's acclaimed “Talking Heads” monologues will be aired on BBC-1 from 10.45pm, whilst over on BBC Four, his longer story “The Lady In the Van” is screened from 10pm, followed by an intimate portrayal of Mr Bennett himself. A socialist of some conviction, Mr Bennett declined an OBE and a Knighthood when offered by the British establishment.
