Atheist magazine The Freethinker every week details some of the strange goings on amongst religious extremists. Since 2004, the magazine has been online, but it can trace its history back to 1881, when it was a rare voice for rationalism in a highly theistic nation. This week, it reports that the fundamentalist think tank Christian Institute is up in arms at the Welsh government, after Deputy Minister for Social Partnership Hannah Blythyn pledged support for prohibiting conversion therapies that seek to reprogram gay or trans people into Christian heterosexuals and gender conformists. The Christian Institute says that such a bar will stop the work of the faithful. The Freethinker and other secular groups point out that on the contrary, the banning of conversion therapy will save young gay and transgender people from groups that tell them to hate themselves.
