BBC Radio news reports that the Metropolitan Police have been formally cleared of any wrongdoing during the controversial policing of an unauthorized protest of women who were marking the murder of Sarah Everard, an issue which has prompted a national debate on heterosexual male violence against women. The unauthorized protest on Clapham Common, took place after the auhethorities disallowed a formal and legal protest and was therefore a form of direct action or civil disobedience. The footage from many news channels of women being forcibly removed from the vigil had prompted many politicians across the Parliamentary divide to demand an inquiry, which was duly held by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies. Even though the Metropolitan Police were found not to have over-reacted or over-policed the event, many people still feel very uneasy about what happened that evening.
