Bristol resident Bijan Ebrahimi was “repeatedly failed” by Avon and Somerset Police, said the Independent Police Complaints Commission last week in a case that has highlighted the dangers of vigilantism and the bigotry that underpins many moral panics. Mr Ebrahimi was falsely accused by racist neighbours of being a paedophile, and was eventually murdered. In an article for the left wing weekly paper Socialist Worker, Tomas Tengley-Evans says that the Police made several breaches of their own hate crime policy in processing Mr Ebrahimi's calls for help. A number of columnists in the gay press, including Conservative gay activist and LBC Radio presenter Iain Dale, have warned that anti-paedophile witch-hunts can be a front for common homophobia.
