Compensation for LGBT+ Military Vets

12/12/2024

The Sky News channel reported on Thursday morning that thousands of LGBT+ people who were removed from their careers in the military owing to their sexuality or gender presentation, are to be able to claim compensation from the government of up to seventy thousand pounds.  The BBC News Channel added that Ministers will also announce that veterans can apply to have their rank restored and discharge reason amended.  Stephen Close, who joined the army when he was 18, said he will be hoping for some financial compensation.  He noted how the army discharge had haunted his life, saying "Because of my criminal record, I've had to go from job to job. I've built no pension whatsoever. I've no savings. I've never been on holiday. I don't think I've ever had anything new. It's just been a constant struggle all my life".
