Permanent London Memorial to HIV Pandemic

14/01/2024

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has said that he is allocating one hundred and thirty thousand pounds from the Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm for the erection of a permanent memorial to the lives lost to the HIV and AIDS pandemic, particularly during the nineteen eighties and nineties, before treatments were available.  Gay Times reports that "It is set to be in place by 2026 and will be located in Camden near the site of the UK’s first dedicated HIV/AIDS hospital ward in the UK".  Mr Khan said that he hoped the memorial would encourage discussion and reflection on the issue of HIV.
