Victory for Centre Left as Gay PM Takes Power

31/10/2025

Pride.Com was among LGBTQIA media reporting this week that the Netherlands has elected a new, gay friendly government, with D66, a liberal left party founded in 1966, gaining the Prime Minister job.  Rob Jetten becomes the first openly gay Dutch PM and the youngest Dutch PM.  He is thirty eight years of age.  Mr Jetten showed that the tide of populist right wing parties can be stemmed with good appeals to the public and he defeated by a large margin, the anti-immigrant, anti-Islamic Geert Wilders, of the PVV Party.  Mr Wilders, for the record denies that he is illiberal and says that he wants to defend Dutch liberal values including gay rights, from Islamist extremists.  While Jetten is a liberal, he hit his stride in his campaign when he broke with other left-leaning establishment politicians by calling “to control the influx” of migrants into the Netherlands, and admitted that increased immigration leads to a “burden in large working-class neighborhoods,” The Times reports. Mr Jetten plans to marry his boyfriend, Nicolas Keenan, an Olympic Athlete, next year.
