Polish Problems Continue After Election

15/07/2020

International cable news channel Al Jazeera reports that it is bad news for minorities and liberal values in Poland, as the country’s hard right President, Andrezj Duda is re-elected for a second term, albeit by a small margin.  Mr Duda had said that he would prevent gay couples from adopting if he was elected.  Pink News added that the campaign had been characterized by “ugly” rhetoric against LGBTQ people and other minorities.  In addition, there was hope for the longer term in the election.  Mr Duda’s support was significantly greater in the older age group.  Younger and more cosmopolitan voters were much more likely to back his liberal opponent and some watchers have suggested that, as in other countries, Mr Duda’s conservatism is a “last gasp” of values that are likely to be consigned to the history books within the next fifty years.
