Them, an online magazine for LGBTQ politics and equality, reports on a major step forward in a country which many of us have visited but where there is still much public intolerence of diversity, with over forty per cent of people saying that homosexuality should “not” be tolerated. The country is Greece, where despite its rich past of gender diversity and ancient experiments in democracy, attitudes lag behind those of western Europe. Now, pro-Western and pro-liberal politician Nicholas Yatromanolakis becomes the first gay man and the first LGBTQ person to be appointed to a cabinet position in the Greek government. He has been selected to be the next Deputy Minister of Culture. He was congratulated online by many members of the community in Greece and also by political commentators, one of whom noted it was high time that Greece enjoyed the benefits of having a more diverse cabinet and noted that it could help solve some of the country's problems.
