German Politician Hopes to Outflank Rightwing

21/11/2023

Euronews Cable Channel reports that veteran of Germany's left wing political scene, Sahra Wagenknecht is leaving the Left Party of Germany to establish a new political grouping.  She hopes that her new Alliance for Reason and Fairness will not only outflank the struggling centre left coalition group, but will also take votes away from the far right, in particular the extremist and homophobic Alliance fur Deutschland, whose support is running at twenty per cent.  Talking with the German public TV channel ARD, Ms Wagenknecht said that many people were voting for the far right out of desperation but were not actually Nazis or far right wingers.  Instead, she wants to offer a party of German democratic leftism, with social policies appealing to social justice, but still maintaining a hard line on immigration.  Ms Wagenknecht hopes that this combination of traditionally left and right platforms can help puncture the Alliance fur Deutshchland and help restore balance to a country deeply worried about the possibility of right wing politics becoming stronger.
