Democratic Norms Threat from Le Pen in France

24/04/2022

The French Jewish organisation Crif has articulated the fears of many in minority communities across the Republic when he said that the “Our freedom, social diversity, traditions, and our country’s stability are at stake.”   The far right National Rally Party headed by Marine le Pen, is just a few points behind the incumbent Centre Right President, Emmanuel Macron.  Le Pen’s manifesto includes a ban on Kosher and Halal slaughter, according to the Jewish Chronicle newspaper.   She previously said she would also extend the ban on the wearing of the Islamic veil and the kippah from public schools and municipal halls to all public areas.  LGBTQIA groups and Muslim organisations are also fearful of what might be unleashed if Le Pen did get elected.  The run off Presidential election takes place on Sunday April 24th.
