Behind the Candelabra is the feature film tonight, Saturday August 8th, on BBC-1 television, starting at five past midnight. Michael Douglas stars as the brilliant but troubled pianist Liberace, who dazzles audiences in the nineteen sixties and seventies with his outlandish performances and equally outlandish costumes. But as straight America is in denial about his sexuality, how can Liberace form a healthy relationship with his lover Scott – played by Matt Damon. Behind the Candelabra is a biopic based on Scott's own memoirs, published after the death of Liberace in 1987.
Meanwhile, if you're sheltering from the sunny weather in your lounge or private room, then The Imitation Game this evening from 6.45pm on Film4 Television will intrigue and educate. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the brilliant gay mathematician Alan Turing, and his life developing the computer codes that aided the Allies in their victory over Germany in the Second World War. But Britain in the post war era is still a very homophobic place and dangerous to be an openly gay man. Film 4 can be found at Channel 14 on Freeview, on Freesat 300, Sky 313, Virgin 428, and Virgin in Ireland on 323.
