Wednesday 2nd December was the United Nations recognised International Day of People With Disabilities. Channel Five Soap Opera “Neighbours” chose the auspicious day to announce that Deaf actor Nathan Borg was to join the popular programme, which depicts life in a suburb of Melbourne. Nathan already plays Curtis Perkins in a recurring guest role. Curtis is a teacher at Erinsborough High who's described by Media Website Digital Spy as "an easy-going guy" and "far tougher than he lets on". Nathan has a cochlear implant, which allows him to hear sounds, but he is still very much a part of the Deaf community. In a press release issued by the programme makers in Australia, "Growing up I never saw anyone like me on television, so I knew it was time to have a hard of hearing actor on our Australian screens. I think it's important in this industry that people with all disabilities of all ages get to tell their stories". We are sure Nathan will be a big hit. “Neighbours” has two showings each weekday on Channel Five, at 1pm and 5.30pm.
