Farewell to Camp Icon

20/06/2021

The gay male pagan cult of Antinous has alerted us this week of the sad passing of actress Damaris Heyman. She has passed to the realm of the great beyond at the age of 92. She will forever be in queer hearts as a camp icon for her legendary and celebrated performance in a 1971 “Doctor Who” adventure called The Daemons. Heyman plays local witch and pagan Miss Hawthorne in the village of Devils End. In a subversion of the usual iconography of horror films, Miss Hawthorne teams up with the Doctor (in his third incarnation played by the equally camp Jon Pertwee) and his friends to expose the local vicar as wicked Time Lord The Master (played with satanic relish by the irrepressible Roger Delgado), who is up to no good summoning ancient aliens in the church crypt. Many science fiction fans consider The Daemons to be amongst the greatest of the Third Doctor's stories, and it is available to buy on DVD.
