Privileged white radical feminists, whose recent actions have included siding with homophobic groups, were slammed in the Independent newspaper by cultural commentator Lola Christina Alao, who called out their racist responses to the fact that the next incarnation of “Doctor Who”, Ncuti Gatwa, is a man of African birth. Ms Alao remarks “Why do people assume white women are the pinnacle of representation? It’s white feminism – an exclusionary form of feminism that only reinforces the power of white people – summarised. A lot of people will feel seen by the casting of Ncuti and I think that’s a beautiful thing.” Over in the Guardian, science fiction writer Tade Thompson quickly put racists who are moaning about a black Doctor in their place, commenting “The idea of having a regular black Doctor has already been explored in fan fiction. Maybe having a black Doctor will open up new storylines, although when it comes to science fiction we’ve never been limited by anything. The limit is the writer’s imagination.”
