Honno Books, the specialist press that celebrates Welsh Women writers, is standing firm despite attracting the ire of the far right wing newspaper The Daily Telegraph. The Telegraph, which dislikes both autonomous Welsh identity and LGBTQIA+ people, has been trying to foment controversy over Honno’s inclusion of transgender women in its submission category. The aim of the Telegraph, as with its treatment of trans charities such as Mermaids, has been to encourage hateful people to swamp given organisations with online harassment. In the case of Mermaids, the trans youth charity, the results of this bitter campaign was to temporarily curtail their phone advice service. Honno was founded in 1986 and is an independent co-operative press dedicated to releasing the best contemporary women’s writing. One online activist quipped “Honno publishes through both English and the Welsh language, and given the hatred of the Torygraph for both the left leaning Welsh people and their beautiful, deeply valued language, it is important that people reject that vile paper’s agenda of hate”.
