March the fourth will be World Book Day and a number of good projects will be asking for the support of the LGBTQ communities. Perhaps at this time of year, it is worth treating yourself, whilst those nights are still dark and long, to a good book – maybe a gay novel, a lesbian romance, or a non binary non fiction work. There are loads to choose from at LGBTQ bookstores such as London’s Gay’s The Word, Liverpool’s News from Nowhere and Southampton’s October Books. Have a look – all the UK’s LGBTQ bookstores do mail order and can help you choose a suitable title. Perhaps you could buy an LGBTQ book for a friend, for someone who has given you some support when you came out, or maybe an educational book for the young people in your family or social circle. Know any teachers? Why not make a donation of some old LGBTQ themed books to their school library, you never know, it could just prove a lifeline to a younger gay, trans or non binary person.
How about your local library? Reckon they need a few LGBTQ books as well. If you are of more of activist mindset, then the charity Haven Distribution supplies free books for prisoners and is operated by a radical workers collective. They usually need supplies of LGBTQ titles. Or if none of those ideas grabs you, why not just sit back with a good book and relax. It is after all, the time of year for it.
