The British African-Caribbean newspaper the Voice reports that asylum seekers who are housed in temporary accommodation such as former barracks and hotels have been subject to more than seventy attacks and instances of abuse since January of last year. The investigation data, also featured in the Guardian is thought to be only the surface of the problem. A considerable number of people seeking asylum in the UK are LGBTQIA+ or connected with human rights groups that support our communities overseas. Maddie Harris, of Humans for Rights Network, told the Guardian: “Ghettoising people seeking safety in large-scale accommodations such as hotels and army barracks exposes them to harm. The figures shown here are not an accurate representation of the level of racial abuse endured by the people we support. We have had numerous conversations with asylum seekers where they have told us how unsafe they feel due to frequent incidents of racial abuse that they have experienced in and around these accommodations.” There are a number of groups that support LGBTQIA Asylum Seekers. We have popped their links up on our news feed at the website in case you want to contact any of them.
