The Irish World newspaper, which has served the Irish community in Britain since 1987, reports that last year, some ninety nine people in the Republic of Ireland obtained a new Gender Recognition Certificate to confirm the gender under which they are now living. The paper says that the Republic's Gender Recognition Act implemented in 2015, allows individuals to apply through the Irish Department of Social Protection for their certificate. Since the introduction of the legislation, two hundred and ninety seven people have been issued with certificates. The paper credits Doctor Lydia Foy, a transwoman, as one of the prime movers in getting the legislation through the Dail, that is, the Irish Parliament.
