Remembering Miners Strike LGBT+ Solidarity

20/07/2024

Subvertiser Darren Cullen, whose work includes clever reworkings of corporate commercials to reveal unpalatable truths about the fossil fuel industry and arms manufacturing, is also an LGBTQIA+ ally, and reports "Last night I went to the absolutely amazing 40th anniversary party of Pits and Perverts, which was a fundraising concert put on in 1984 by Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners to raise funds for south Wales coal miners during the miners strike. Many of the surviving members of LGSM and NUM were there, as well as their modern sister-org LGSMigrants.   It is an incredible story, one that was told brilliantly in the 2014 film, Pride. Which I highly recommend watching if you've not seen it! The fact that LGBT+ rights in the UK were partly won through solidarity with coal miners in the trade union movement is both mindblowing and eternally inspiring."  Thanks Darren.  And we note that a lot of LGBTQIA+ people have contributed to the subervitising movement over the years.
