Val McDermid is a lesbian icon, no question. She is a top selling crime writer as well and has delighted millions of fans with her books. She was the first state school pupil to be admitted to the prestigious Saint Hilda's College at Oxford University. Ms McDermid has a new text out soon, already available for pre-order. “My Scotland” will take the reader to landscapes that Val loves, and which have informed her crime fiction. The publishers state: “Accompanied by over 100 stunning photographs, this remarkable book uncovers Val’s own Scotland in all its glory – from the iconic Isle of Skye to the majestic streets of Edinburgh; from the undiscovered hideaways of the Highlands to the wild and untamed Jura”. It looks like it's going to a phenomenal read. If you're interested, think about getting your copy from an independent, or alternative bookstore – there are still a number of them surviving across the UK and US, and as a feminist, socialist and champion of independent literature, Val would surely approve. Val was a guest on the “Book Club” programme on BBC Radio Four on Friday evening, where she was helping to review the books that have been hitting the shelves. BBC Radio Four is available nationally on FM radio, DAB, Freeview and cable platforms.
