Community Split on Whether we Need Airline

30/04/2021

Sometimes the LGBTQ community is split along deeply old fashioned political lines. This was the case with the relevlation that a new enterprise, Pride Airlines, would from 2022 be running regular services aimed at an exclsuively LGBTQ clientele. The raison de'etre is that LGBTQ fliers may wish to travel in a relaxed environment free from the threat of verbal or physical abuse. Human Rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, however, whilst acknowledging that some older members of our community might require peaceful, affirmative surroundings, was not convinced, saying “There is no evidence that LGBTs feel unsafe when flying, so why do we need an exclusive ‘safe’ airline experience? These are all questions the airline needs to answer.” This looks like another corporate bid to cash-in on the pink pound. There are so many more important issues we should be addressing today.”
