Atheist campaigners in the city of Bristol have been alert to a campaign of illegal flyposting being carried out by a Christian fundamentalist. Across the city public property has been defaced with stickers, posters and graffiti telling people to “repent”. Although there is nothing speficially homophobic in the messages, the fact that there is a high concentration of graffiti near the rainbow crossing on Wine Street suggests that the perpetrator holds anti-gay opinions. The handwriting has been looked at compared with direct vandalism of the rainbow crossing in 2019 and there appears to be a correlation. Atheist bloggers condemned the vandalising of public property with one remarking “far from being law abiding citizens, these acts show that religious extremists will break any law they wish to force their views on people”. Bristol City Council says “Unwanted graffiti costs the Council and the people of Bristol money. To help tackle graffiti, you can remove it from your property as soon as possible, report it to the council for removal and report it to the police.”
