The acclaimed Netflix series 'Boots' will not return for a second season. The show, which premiered earlier this year, starred Miles Heizer as Cameron Cope, a young gay man navigating his identity within the United States Marine Corps during a period when homosexuality could lead to dismissal from the military.
Heizer, who recently appeared as a cover star for The Advocate, had publicly expressed hope for the show's continuation. While attending the Out100 party, he stated he was "manifesting Boots season 2." However, in a new statement, the actor confirmed the cancellation. "Well, I'm sad to report that Boots isn't being renewed for a second season," Heizer said. "I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support they gave this show. It truly shattered my expectations, and I couldn't be more grateful."
He added a characteristically wry note, reflecting on the show's impact. "Yes, I'm pretty disappointed we won't be returning. But the friends I made and being called woke garbage by the pentagon are things I will cherish for the rest of my life." The latter comment references the criticism the series received from some US government quarters, which labelled its portrayal as "woke".
With its cancellation, 'Boots' joins a list of notable LGBTQ+ series that ended after a single season, such as 'A League of Their Own', 'Mid-Century Modern', 'My So-Called Life', and 'Q-Force'. The show tapped into a rich vein of LGBTQIA+ cultural fascination with military life, a theme present in various plays and visual media over the years, despite the broader LGBT+ movement's historical alignment with pacifist and anti-militarist politics.
