Left Paper, a Key Ally in the Fight Against Section 28, Publishes its 3000th issue.

Leftist weekly newspaper Socialist Worker this week publishes its three thousandth issue. Its critique of the LGBTQIA+ movements for being too separatist and needing to ally with the working class, a traditional Marxist view, is rejected by most activists within the LGBTQIA+ movement. Nevertheless as the paper marks 3000 issues in print, it is worth acknowledging its organisational support through several chapters of our community's history. Simon Edge, whose post-Marxist analysis of gay politics is critical of the left involvement with the movement, nevertheless conceded that the Socialist Worker's coverage and organisational skills against Section 28 were instrumental in helping the gay movement resist the hated anti-gay law of 1988. "Defend Gays and Defend Lesbians" read the headlines of Socialist Worker on the day the law came into force. In more recent times, the Socialist Worker has published pro-trans articles, including the headline "Trans Women are Women", where as others, even other leftist papers like the communist leaning Morning Star, have gone into the trans exclusionary camp, influenced by Stalinist forms of feminism. The SW's support on trans+ protests has been appreciated. Historically, we should also note that the Socialist Worker printing press in London was for many years the only off litho printing project in the country that would handle magazines like "Gay Times" and "The Pink Paper". You can buy Socialist Worker, and what remains of the LGBTQIA+ press as well through radical and independent bookstores in most parts of the UK.
