LGBTQ Nation web portal reports that a non-profit making health care provider has taken steps to counter the right wing pseudo debate about transgender people's lives.
A New York City-based nonprofit is launching a major billboard campaign in Kansas, aiming to reach an estimated 1.2 million drivers with a message of support for transgender people. The initiative from Mayday Health, which focuses on reproductive and gender-affirming care education, features billboards stating "God Made Trans People" and directs viewers to the organisation's website for resources.
The campaign is a direct response to recent legislation in Kansas. In February, the state began ordering transgender residents to surrender their driver's licences if the gender marker does not match their sex assigned at birth, or face potential penalties including misdemeanour charges. This followed the Republican-led legislature overriding Governor Laura Kelly's veto to pass Senate Bill 244.
"When governments target folks and violate their fundamental rights, we respond," said Liv Raisner, executive director of Mayday Health, in a press release. "In Kansas and beyond, we’re reminding trans people that they are not alone, and information about gender-affirming care is a click away."
The new law, which was added as a provision to an unrelated bill, requires Kansas driver's licences and birth certificates to reflect a person's sex assigned at birth, irrespective of their gender identity. Official letters dated 23 February informed affected individuals that their current credentials would become "invalid immediately" upon the law's enactment, with no grace period provided for updates.
Commentators have described the legislation as a severe erosion of transgender civil rights. LGBTQ Nation writer Cody Hays noted that the law represents a culmination of several years of restrictive policies in Kansas targeting transgender youth healthcare, gender marker changes, and athletic participation.
In contrast, Mayday Health's four-week campaign seeks to affirm transgender identities publicly. "Trans people deserve the same freedom as all Americans," Raisner added. "They belong everywhere, from the halls of government to the bathrooms that align with their identities."
