The 26th of April marks Lesbian Visibility Day, the celebratory finale to Lesbian Visibility Week. This dedicated period aims to spotlight and honour lesbian, bisexual, and queer women, as well as non-binary people, within the broader LGBTQ+ community. In recognition, West London Queer Project (WLQP) is hosting a special comedy event, bringing together some of the UK's top comedic talent for an evening of laughter and community.
The headline show, taking place on Lesbian Visibility Day itself, will feature sets from acclaimed comedians Twayna Mayne, Catherine Bohart, and Sapphire Macintosh. Promising a night of unapologetic energy and humour, the event is designed to close the important week on a joyful and communal note.
For those unfamiliar with its origins, Lesbian Visibility Week is a global movement. Its core purpose is to increase the representation of LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people across all areas of society, from media and workplaces to schools and public spaces. Advocates stress that visibility is a form of power that can drive meaningful change, countering the under-representation and exclusion that can contribute to poorer mental health and higher risks of violence.
The prominence of the 'L' in the acronym LGBTQ+ also carries historical significance, often traced to the AIDS crisis. During that period, lesbian communities played a crucial role, stepping in to provide care, organise support groups, and fundraise for research and healthcare when many gay and bisexual men faced severe stigma and were abandoned by wider society. Placing the 'L' first is seen by many as a gesture of gratitude for this activism and a reminder of solidarity within the community.
WLQP's comedy night is framed as a fitting way to celebrate this spirit of community and resilience. The organisers highlight comedy as a powerful tool for bringing people together, celebrating unique identities, and fostering joy. The line-up showcases a range of styles, from Twayna Mayne's award-nominated stand-up and Catherine Bohart's critically acclaimed storytelling to Sapphire Macintosh's high-energy, socially observant routines.
The event is open to all, with the hope that everyone, regardless of how they identify, can join in the reflection and celebration. Further details and tickets for the Lesbian Visibility Day Comedy Show are available on the WLQP website.
