Community Vigilant in Perth (Australia) after Bigots Publish Illegal Leaflets Slurring LGBTQIA People as Paedophiles, Rapists

ABC News Radio in Australia, reports that police are investigating hate literature circulating in Perth, in Western Territories.

Authorities in Western Australia are investigating a series of malicious flyers distributed to mailboxes across Perth, which personally target members of the LGBTQIA+ community. The materials feature individuals' names and photographs alongside explicit and unfounded text, accusing them of serious crimes including paedophilia.

The flyers are anonymous, providing no detail about their author, and the persons delivering them have not been identified. The campaign has caused significant distress among those targeted.

Gregory Helleren, a board member of Pride WA, found his image used in one such flyer, which contained accusations that pride groups were funding child abuse. "I'm a pretty resilient guy, but it has been very disturbing," he told ABC Radio Perth.

Mr Helleren stated he reported the flyer to police in February but heard nothing until uniformed officers later visited his home, asking him to deny the allegations. He claimed the attending officers were unaware of the earlier reports. In response, the City of Perth's LGBTQIA+ Advisory Group, of which he is a member, plans to ask the Lord Mayor to contact the WA Attorney General to advocate for stronger anti-vilification protections.

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch warned that those responsible for making or distributing the flyers could face criminal charges and civil lawsuits. "It very much depends on what the message is, and the words used, depending on how it's then interpreted," he said. He urged anyone who receives a flyer to report it to police first, noting that civil remedies for defamation may also be available.

Graeme Watson, editor of the LGBTQIA+ publication OUTinPerth, expressed shock at the homophobic content. He confirmed speaking with another person targeted in January, who received a flyer in his own letterbox containing a litany of outrageous and ridiculous accusations.
