San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has formally recognised the Bay Area Reporter, the city's historic LGBTQ+ newspaper, on the occasion of its 55th anniversary. Mayor Lurie presented a proclamation to the publication's owner-publisher, Michael Yamashita, celebrating the milestone.

The proclamation honoured the free community newspaper, which serves the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer+ communities across the San Francisco Bay Area. It stated, "We join the staff and readers of the Bay Area Reporter in celebrating the historic 55th anniversary of its founding."

Founded on April 1, 1971, by the late Bob Ross, the award-winning publication holds a unique civic status. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has designated it as the official LGBTQ community outreach publication for the City and County of San Francisco.

The Bay Area Reporter encourages readers to stay informed on the latest local news, arts, politics, and entertainment. The publication also invites support for its operations, describing itself as California's largest LGBTQ newsroom. It offers a platform for community advocacy through one-time, monthly, or annual contributions, aiming to amplify its coverage and ensure access to news and cultural information for all, regardless of their ability to pay.
