The Bay Area Reporter, the long established queer newspaper in San Francisco carried an extensive report this week on a man who has vandalised a church in the city and made threats towards Jews and LGBTQUIA+ people. Ironically, the church he caused twenty thousand dollars of damage to, is known to be fairly anti-gay. Like most bizarre traits of the violent movement, there is no reason displayed in the target.
Court documents reveal that a man charged with defacing a San Francisco church with pro-Hitler graffiti also allegedly threatened to carry out a mass shooting targeting the city's LGBTQ and Jewish communities. The details emerged from filings obtained by the Bay Area Reporter.
Sadat Mousa, 51, was arrested on 28 February on suspicion of vandalising the Seventh-day Adventist Church on California Street in Pacific Heights. The graffiti, described as homophobic and antisemitic, caused an estimated $20,000 in damage. His arraignment is scheduled for 5 March.
At a news conference on 4 March, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced formal charges against Mousa. These include felony vandalism with a hate crime enhancement, two felony counts of vandalising a place of worship, felony placement of a swastika, and two misdemeanour vandalism counts. Prosecutors will seek to have Mousa detained before trial, citing the risk he allegedly poses.
"I want to address the LGBTQ community in San Francisco," Jenkins stated. "This is something we are very aware of and take seriously." She also noted a broader rise in antisemitic incidents in recent years.
The prosecution's detention motion elaborates on the alleged threats. It references a report from Mousa's brother, Amjad, who told police in June 2025 that Mousa had expressed increasingly hostile views towards Jewish and LGBTQ people following the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent war. According to the motion, Amjad stated that Mousa walked into a market on Broderick Street and announced, "I am going to get an AK-47, and I am going to go to a synagogue and shoot all the Jews and then shoot all the gays in San Francisco." The San Francisco Police Department conducted a threat assessment after this report.
The motion also details a history of concerning behaviour, including a 2021 incident where Mousa claimed he was being spied on by then-Vice President Kamala Harris. It references past alleged threats of violence against his brother and violations of a restraining order.
The latest incident allegedly occurred last Saturday morning, when Mousa vandalised the church, a mailbox, a utility box, and a parking meter near the intersection of California and Broderick Streets. When asked why the specific church was targeted, District Attorney Jenkins said the motive may become clearer with further investigation. The church itself has not commented.
Mousa is currently being held in San Francisco jail on $100,000 bond.
