Uganda's Autocratic President Seeks New Term

06/07/2025

The BBC News Channel reports that Yoweri Museveni, the highly homophobic country's de facto dictator for the last forty years, is seeking re-election at the age of eighty.  Mr Museveni has already amended the constitution of the country twice to allow him to maintain an autocratic hold over the state, with one of his main opposition candidates, Kizza Besigye, in prison on trumped up charges of treason.  Corrupt even by the standards of failed democracies, the BBC reminds us that international observers have found that past elections have been characterised by major allegations of vote rigging.  For the LGBTQIA+ community in the country, the situation remains one of harassment and petty prison sentences, with harsh anti-gay laws in effect as a consequence of a perfect storm of US evangelical interference in the country, and Black Nationalists who seek "macho" leadership.
