The gay magazine Pride reports that a power lesbian couple who are also celebrated soccer stars are heading up a new pro-adoption animal rights campaign from the vegan charity PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Soccer superstars and gay athlete power couple Christen Press and Tobin Heath have been a couple for nine years. They played together for several years on the USNWT and won back-to-back World Cups with the team in 2015 and 2019. Now, the couple has teamed up with PETA for a new campaign sharing how their adopted dog has improved their lives and encouraging others to adopt pets as well. The soccer players star in a new video where they tell the story of how they adopted their dog, Bobbi. In the video, Heath reveals that Bobbi started as a foster dog for the couple, but they couldn't imagine giving her up and ended up adopting her permanently. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals explain the reason behind the new high profile campaign. "With millions of homeless dogs and cats in the U.S. alone, animal shelters across the country are constantly overflowing with unwanted animals. Some shelters with misguided “no-kill” policies warehouse dogs for months or even years, turning away countless animals. This leaves many animals in need with nowhere to go—and those who reproduce contribute to the companion animal overpopulation crisis even more. For those who aren’t yet ready to make a lifelong commitment—or who have the time and space for another companion—fostering an animal can improve their chance at adoption by giving them opportunities to exercise and socialize. It also creates room for more animals in the shelter."
