The left wing weekly paper Socialist Worker says that a strong popular movement against the far right was coalescing ahead of National Anti-racist demonstrations scheduled for Saturday March 28th. The Together alliance against the far right has hit the ground running in the New Year. It came together last month to organise a unity demonstration in London on 28 March—and activists are busy setting up mobilising meetings and booking transport. The alliance has won the backing of over 80 organisations and high-profile individuals from the Palestine movement and Green Party leader Zack Polanski to NGOs and charities. Your Party MPs Zarah Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn and Labour MPs Richard Burgon, Aspana Begum, Clive Lewis, Dawn Butler and Stella Creasy. An array of unions have signed up to it, including Unite, Unison, NEU, PCS, UCU, RMT, FBU, Bfawu and TSSA. Faith groups, individuals and rock bands are also backing the coalition.
Tom Kay, a Unison union representative, said "We are speaking to the Palestine coalition. We’re making contact with the Greens, the Muslim organisations and a number of anti-racist community groups who we want to be part of the process. We want people to feel confident and able to organise.” Tom thought that it can be “quite easy” to be “demoralised by the barrage of racist populism and the spinelessness of the Labour leadership”. “We need to bridge the gap between where we are now and where we would like to be in terms of an anti-racist movement,” he said.
