CPUSA - Pride is a Working Class Protest

The Communist Party of the USA has reminded LGBTQIA+ participants of Pride Marches, that the original gay liberation movement owed a great deal to the left, even when this was not always reciprocated. The party issued a press release saying "The LGBTQ+ community is under attack. This is especially true for our trans siblings, targeted for erasure by the fascist right and abandoned by allies willing to throw them under the bus for the sake of political expediency. Even some leftists are all too ready to dismiss the oppression of queer and trans people. For Marxist-Leninists, however, the working-class can and must take up the banner of every struggle against oppression. Join us for a working-class, revolutionary, antifascist celebration of Pride!"

Early communists and the working class movement was in alliance with progressive ideas on feminism and sexuality, but after the failure of the Russian experiment in communism, the movement globally went down a brutally homophobic path. Only with the rediscovery of gay liberation thought in the later 1960s did the tide begin to turn again and leftist organisations, including trade unions and the progressive press, reaffirm their commitment to equality.
