We are always delighted to learn about new gay bi, trans and queer media projects and this September, really capturing the imagination is the return of an old favourite.
BEAR, the iconic publication that helped define an era of rugged and hairy masculinity, is returning to print this September after a 15-year absence. Pre-orders are due to open shortly, and Early Bird Subscriptions are already on offer at the most competitive prices likely ever to be seen for the title.
The resurrected magazine will appear on a quarterly basis, with copies available to order online, at major bear events across the calendar, and through a limited selection of physical retail stockists.
Originally launched in San Francisco in 1987 by partners Richard Bulger and Chris Nelson, Bear Magazine rapidly became a defining visual and cultural marker for a then-fringe area of queer life. Its aesthetic continues to shape bear culture worldwide today. The publication initially ceased in 2002, was brought back for another two-year print run in 2008, and later moved online during the 2010s before gradually fading away entirely, leaving a bear-shaped absence at the heart of the global community.
In 2024, ownership of the title passed to Richard Jones, a seasoned LGBTQ+ media publisher who had previously founded and overseen the highly successful Bear World Magazine. Jones moved quickly to formulate plans for a triumphant return, and in the interim launched a website to make sure the influential brand was never wholly lost to time.
Now, after the best part of two years of careful development, and with a hand-picked team of photographers, writers and designers in place, Jones is finally ready to reintroduce the title. The new BEAR is being presented as a loving reimagining of the classic magazine, retaining much-loved sections including photos of muscular models, seductive short stories and even the legendary personal advertisements, all refreshed for a modern readership.
Those who remember the original Bear Magazine will be able to trace its clear lineage throughout the new publication, while first-time readers will discover a title built for the 21st century.
