Porn Clampdown, Mainly Aimed at Straight Misogynist Material, May Affect Gay/Bi Porn Too

Coast Radio a commercial radio station serving the Yorkshire littoral, reports that a clampdown on certain depictions in fantasy pornography, announced by the government, will take force on 6 November, after cross-party pressure about the negative impact of the material on women and girls. Three categories of porn representation will be affected: incestuous relationships, someone pretending to be underage, and the depiction of strangulation or suffocation, sometimes called "breath play" on the gay scene.

Lawmakers were at pains to emphasise that the provisions were mainly aimed at representations of females in heterosexual (straight) pornography. Justice minister Alex Davies-Jones said that the government "has a commitment to halve violence against women and girls in a decade," and that "for many people, it is still easy to access harmful pornography online". "This isn't about criminalising harmless sexual preferences," she added. "But porn can shape what people think a healthy relationship looks like, especially young people.

The Sky News Channel added "Conservative peer Baroness Gabby Bertin, who recommended the measure in her 2025 review into pornography regulation, said the announcement comes "not a moment too soon". Lady Bertin's report found pornography which shows women being choked can have "devastating" real-world consequences, and highlighted "disturbing" role-play, including incest and adults portraying children.

It is not at this stage clear what effects the new legislation will have on lesbian, bisexual or gay pornography. Some people online have expressed disquiet that the new laws, whilst aimed at abusive heterosexual hookups, could be used to harass consenting homosexual and bisexual nightclubs that specialise in SM and people who prefer a kinkier style of sex in the privacy of their own homes.
