LGBT+ Progressives Join Coalition of Workers

18/08/2025

LGBTQIA + activists, especially those on the left, green and progressive parts of the political spectrum, are mobilising for a march that is due to take place in London on Saturday 20th September.  The Make Them Pay Coalition aims to ensure that the rich and powerful pay their fair share of tax and undo the damage done to Britain by three decades of free market meltdown.  The broad ranging coalition brings LGBT+ activists to work alongside trade unions, faith groups, political progressives and radicals and organisations as diverse as War on Want and the Friends of the Earth.  The coalition says in a press release "Make Them Pay is an ambitious and growing civil society alliance, working to build unprecedented unity across the climate, workers’ and social justice movements. We’re demanding action that can tackle the climate crisis and social injustice, rebuilding society for the people who keep it running, not the rich and powerful...

1. Tax the super-rich

The NHS is crumbling, schools are underfunded, energy bills keep rising – and billionaires keep getting richer. But politicians are choosing to balance the books on the backs of the poorest people. It’s time to tax the super-rich and use this money to fund the services we all depend on.

2. Protect workers, not billionaires

The economy should work for the people who keep the country running, not corporations and billionaires. Our government must prioritise creating decent, well-paid, unionised jobs for everyone in every community, and supporting the renewable industries of the future, rather than preserving extreme wealth for a few at the top.

3. Make polluters pay

Half the world’s emissions come from a handful of fossil fuel companies. Polluting corporations across a host of sectors have known about the danger they’re putting us all in for decades. The people who have made trillions knowingly destroying nature, and putting our futures at risk, must foot the bill for cleaning up the mess they’ve created."

The press release concludes:  Join us at Portland Place, London (W1B 3DA) at 12pm on Saturday 20 September.  Extinction Rebellion Bristol adds that coaches from many major cities, including Bristol, will be organised.  Check out the Make them Pay Coalition online for more information.
