Bristol Pride Lead Speaks Out on Public Opinion

Bristol Pride's Daryn Carter gave a no holds barred and insightful interview to the Bristol Post Newspaper this week. Pulling no punches, Daryn addressed homophobia and transphobia and the rise of the new right wing in politics.

Daryn explained also that the costs of running Bristol Pride have skyrocketed in recent years and noted that many corporate sponsors are facing increases in taxation which means that the money available for supporting community events like LGBTQIA Pride is no longer there.

In terms of public attitudes, Daryn said that the present year was the most challenging since he helped reboot Pride and bring it back to Bristol in 2010. Fifty nine per cent of LGBT+ people (86 % of trans people) have experienced harrasment in Bristol over the last year - which is way above the national average figure.

But Daryn also put the conspiracy theorists and anti-LGBT+ bigots in their place. He noted "Trans people are not the reason that there's been years of underfunding in public services and gay people aren't the reason why there are potholes in the road".
