Police Investigate Series of Assaults in Bristol's Castle Park

Detectives in Bristol are continuing an investigation into four assaults that occurred in Castle Park over a recent ten-day period, with officers exploring potential homophobic motivations. The incidents, which took place between November 30 and December 5, have prompted a major operation with senior oversight to ensure a thorough inquiry.

The latest reported assault happened on the evening of December 5, when a man in his thirties was struck on the head, sustaining injuries assessed as Actual Bodily Harm (ABH). He received treatment at a hospital. A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with this incident. He has been interviewed and released on police bail while the investigation proceeds.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Alistair Norman, stated, “While we remain open-minded about the direction of this investigation and the motivation for the assaults, we are currently treating these incidents as linked. We’ve made one arrest and are continuing to speak to the victims, review CCTV footage, and carry out other enquiries to identify the offenders responsible for these concerning incidents.”

The first assault was reported around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, November 30. A man in his forties was approached by two unknown males who shone a light in his eyes and struck him on the head, causing him to fall. He sustained injuries to his wrist, back, shoulder, and head, which are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Two further similar incidents were reported in the early hours of Wednesday, December 3, involving men in their forties and twenties. Neither is thought to have required medical treatment. Descriptions of the suspects are limited but indicate two males, one described as white, both wearing face coverings and dark clothing.

Bristol Central Neighbourhood Chief Inspector John Shaddick addressed community concerns, saying, “We understand this update will be distressing for members of our community. There is no place for hate crime in our city and we will not tolerate such behaviour.” He outlined increased safety measures, including the deployment of mounted police, dog units, and heightened foot patrols in Castle Park and the wider city centre. Authorities are also working closely with LGBTQ+ leaders, Bristol City Council, local businesses, and CCTV operators.

Police are urging anyone with information, including potential witnesses or those with relevant dashcam, doorbell, or CCTV footage, to come forward. They are particularly keen to speak with a potential witness to the first assault, described as a man of Indian descent in his thirties with short hair. Reports can be made to police by calling 101 and quoting reference 5225345559. Anonymous reports can be made to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or through partners like Stand Against Racism and Inequality (SARI).

The public is advised to remain vigilant in the area after dark. Victims of hate crime are encouraged to report incidents promptly via 101, online, or in an emergency, by calling 999.
