The Australian gay newspaper, Sydney Star Observer reports that the community will be out in force on Wednesday as they hand a drag stalwart on to the realm of our LGBTQIA+ ancestors.
The service will take place on Wednesday, 11 March, at Paddington Town Hall on Oxford Street.
The iconic performer, whose real name was Kristopher Elliot, passed away in February at the age of 51 following a battle with cancer. Her death prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes, including a dedicated segment in this year's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade.
In a joint statement, Maxi's partner, David, and fellow queens Tora Hymen, Vanity and Jacquie St Hyde—who helped raise funds for the service—said: "Maxi wasn’t just a drag superstar. She was an icon, a worldwide superstar, a sister, a loud laugh in a quiet room, and a fierce advocate for her community." They added, "She made us feel seen. She reminded us to be bold, and to take up space. Now it’s our turn to show up for her."
Maxi Shield was a staple of the Sydney drag scene for over two decades and gained international recognition after competing in the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under. Her remarkable career included performances at the closing ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and the opening of the 2002 Gay Games.
The celebration will be held on Oxford Street, the famed strip central to her career. Due to capacity limits at the town hall, several nearby venues—The Oxford, Stonewall, Universal, and The Burdekin—will live-stream the service for the public.
Attendees are encouraged to follow a dress code of "smart and dignified with a pop of colour," with a special welcome for purple and sparkles, which were among Maxi's favourite looks.
Following the service, a procession will carry Maxi on a final journey down Oxford Street, where well-wishers are invited to line the street to wave farewell. An after-party will then be held at the Beresford Upstairs for those wishing to continue celebrating her life.
The celebration of Maxi Shield's life will begin at 11:00 am AEDT on 11 March 2026 and will also be live-streamed online.
