The weekend saw the eightieth anniversary of the birth of Farrokh Bulsara, known internationally as Freddie Mercury. He was born on 5th September 1946. Numerous LGBTQIA+ and general media observed the date and paid tribute to Mr Mercury, the driving force behind legendary rock band Queen, and who passed on to the realm of LGBTQIA ancestors on 25th November 1991, from an AIDS related condition.
LGBTQIA presenter DJ Violet on Mixcloud gave a potted history of Mercury's life, whilst BBC 2 Television gave a whole evening over to Queen and Mercury. As well as footage of performances, a documentary was aired looking at Freddie's life through the lens of the emerging AIDS crisis of the 1980s and early 1990s. Interviews with health campaigners, and those who survived the pandemic were featured, and we learned how the band and the world of pop music came together to use Freddie's passing to hold an extraordinary tribute concert which helped change the narrative on AIDS from one of blame and scapegoating to compassion and humanity.
