RCS Radio Today, a media news site, reports that Sam Smith, non binary gay hero singer, is working with BBC Radio 1, the corporation's youth station, to promote new bands and see if one can open for Sam Smith's shows later this year.

A new initiative linking chart-topping artist Sam Smith with BBC Introducing is set to give ten up-and-coming musicians the chance of a lifetime. The collaboration, revealed on Radio 1’s New Music Show with Jack Saunders, will see selected acts open for Sam’s UK residency performances in Manchester and London later this year.

Aspiring artists can submit their work through the BBC Introducing Uploader between 29 July and 5 August. Those hoping to be considered must use the ‘Sam Smith’ tag when sending in their material. A panel from BBC Introducing will then draw up a shortlist, with Sam personally choosing the final ten acts. The successful names are due to be confirmed later in the summer.

The winners will not only perform as the supporting act at one of Sam’s residency shows but will also gain exposure across BBC Introducing’s various platforms. The opportunity comes hot on the heels of Sam’s forthcoming album, Hazel Eyes, which is scheduled for release in August. The residency itself features two nights at Manchester’s Albert Hall and eight nights at London’s Coliseum.

Speaking about the partnership, Sam described the chance to be involved as “exciting” and underlined how vital the discovery process is for both musicians and audiences alike. Lorna Clarke, Director of BBC Music, said the scheme highlights the organisation’s dedication to nurturing emerging talent while forging links between them and established stars. Kelly Betts, Editor of BBC Introducing, added that the collaboration will provide ten newcomers with a platform to open for Sam’s September shows, showcasing the country’s next generation of musical talent.

The initiative forms part of the BBC’s Summer of Music 2026, a broader programme that also includes exclusive live performances and extensive festival coverage throughout the season.
