Superbowl Line Up Prompts Childish MAGA Meltdown

Out Magazine reports on the conservative MAGA movement's bizarre reaction to announcements from the American Football league, the NFL, recently.

The announcement of Puerto Rican global superstar Bad Bunny as the headline act for the upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show has sparked significant backlash from some conservative commentators. Critics have levelled accusations of the event becoming overly politicised, with some extreme reactions even involving threats to involve Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). An online petition was also created in protest.

In a move that appears to have further inflamed the situation, the National Football League (NFL) has expanded its performer lineup with artists celebrated within the LGBTQ+ community. Lesbian singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile has been confirmed to perform "America the Beautiful" in the pregame show. Furthermore, punk rock band Green Day, fronted by bisexual lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, will perform as part of the event's opening ceremony.

Separately, a new trailer for the forthcoming "Masters of the Universe" film has also become an unlikely flashpoint for similar grievances. The movie stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, the alter ego of the classic hero He-Man. While the project seems a quintessential fantasy adventure, a brief moment of humour in the preview has drawn ire.

The scene shows Adam, having arrived in the modern world, clarifying that he uses "he/him" pronouns—a clear play on his heroic moniker, "He-Man". Despite the joke's apparent basis in the character's well-established name, some conservative voices on social media have reacted with anger. They have framed the line as an endorsement of so-called "woke" ideology, accusing the film of promoting a "mind virus" by casually acknowledging pronoun usage.
