The Feminist Gender Equality Network has issued a press release saying that their forthcoming symposium is being moved as a consequence of a surprise move by trade union UNISON.

The Network reports "It is with regret that FGEN has decided to relocate the venue for our upcoming event, which was due to take place this week.

This decision follows the publication of guidance in the recent UNISON conference bulletin that excludes trans women from participation in next year’s Women’s Conference. After careful consideration, our steering group concluded that it would be inconsistent with our values and the expectations of both our members and the wider community to continue using a venue associated with an organisation that is perceived as marginalising trans women.

We recognise that recent legal developments have placed constraints on trade unions and other organisations in this area. However, we are disappointed by what we see as a lack of visible support for trans members from UNISON. In particular, there has been no substantive public statement addressing these changes, with the new restrictions appearing only as a relatively quiet addition to conference documentation.

This decision has not been taken lightly. We value constructive engagement and recognise the important work that trade unions undertake. Nevertheless, we believe that relocating the event is the most appropriate course of action given the concerns expressed by our members and supporters.
