Cautious Thanks for By Election Result

LGBTQIA Election watchers and politicians have broadly welcomed the result of the Holborn and St Pancras By Election, which was triggered by the standing down of former Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer. Parties traditionally supportive of LGBTQI rights did well and explicitly homophobic and transphobic politicians performed poorly.

Sagal Abdi-Wali held the seat for Labour. She has a reputation as being on the left of the party. The Green Party had invested considerable amounts of time and resources fighting to get their leader, Zack Polanski, elected to Parliament, but with dissention in their ranks over the Israel-Palestine conflict, he came second with just under nine thousand votes. It was still an impressive result for the Greens, and the leftist daily paper Morning Star editorialised that Labour was on notice that other left wing parties are making in roads into their territory.

Reform UK came in fourth place, with just over sixteen hundred votes, whilst explicitly anti-queer parties such as George Galloway's Workers Party, Christian Peoples' Alliance, Restore Britain and UK Independence Party all polled desultory results. Centrist and left commentators will be satisfied that these anti-gay parties split the bigotry vote and render it irrelevant.

Other parties standing at the election included the Liberal Democrats, the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, Rejoin the EU, and the Communist League.
