Actor Russell Tovey has publicly announced he has joined the Green Party, expressing significant disappointment with the current Labour government. The revelation came during the Attitude 101 charity lunch in London, where Tovey, named Attitude's Man of the Year for 2025, praised Green Party deputy leader Zack Polanski.
Tovey stated he felt "very, very disappointed" by Labour's failure to follow through on promised policies, some of which he said had been reversed. He specifically cited feeling let down on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community. "I think all the backtracking on the things they set out to do in the first place," he said, describing the situation as "incredibly frustrating to watch."
He directed strong praise towards Green Party figure Zack Polanski, who recently featured on the cover of Attitude magazine. Tovey called Polanski "incredibly inspiring and exactly what we need right now," highlighting his podcast and policies as a source of hope. "I think he’s a great political figure to get behind," Tovey added.
The actor linked his political shift directly to this admiration, confirming, "I’ve joined the Green Party." He encouraged others to support the party, stating, "As a community, they’re a party that we can really look to, to represent us."
This move aligns with Tovey's previous political commentary. In a speech at the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards in late 2024, he warned against "catastrophically damaging and hostile government rhetoric." His decision to switch allegiance comes as the Green Party reports a surge in membership, now exceeding 190,000 members.
