City Hall Marks World AIDS Day

Councillors Reaffirm Commitment to Ending Stigma

Last night, Bristol’s City Hall was illuminated in red to mark World AIDS Day, an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic and mourning those lost to the disease.

The symbolic gesture was highlighted by two of the city’s senior councillors, who reflected on the day’s significance. Councillor Lorraine Francis, Chair of the Adult Social Care Committee, and Councillor Stephen Williams, Chair of the Public Health and Communities Committee, emphasised the opportunity to show care, listen, and stand in solidarity with those affected by HIV in Bristol.

In a joint statement, they said:

“Last night, we lit up City Hall in red, standing with people living with HIV, honouring those we’ve lost, and challenging stigma affecting people’s lives. Whilst HIV treatment has come a long way, World AIDS Day is a reminder that many old fears don’t reflect reality today. Stigma still exists, and it can stop people seeking help or feeling fully part of their community.

“As a council, we’re committed to making sure our services are always welcoming, informed, and supportive. We’ll also continue working in partnership, alongside people with lived experience, to keep making things better across the city.”

Their comments underscore a dual focus: acknowledging the medical advances in HIV treatment while confronting the persistent social stigma that continues to impact individuals. The council reaffirmed its dedication to providing inclusive services and collaborating with the community to foster greater understanding and support.
