Sky News reports that the US Mid Term elections, can be read as a rejection of US President Donald Trump and his authoritarian style, as well as the extremist policies of the Republican Party. At the same time, the Democratic Party's gains may not necessarily be a wholehearted endorsement of that party's electoral support. The BBC News Channel added that around a third of seats in the Senate and every seat in the House of Representatives were up for election. In a telling and unprecedented admission, the anti-LGBT governor of Florida, Ronald De Santis said "“This is close to an extinction-level event for Republicans in many parts of the country,” Desantis said in his speech to reporters. He later continued: “I knew Republicans were in trouble when I was reading an overview about what they were running ads on, and they’re spending hundreds of millions on transgender ads… That was not the issue motivating voters, and it was kind of an attempt to just scare Republicans to vote.”
American Atheists said "Yesterday, across the country and up and down ballots, voters rejected the White Christian Nationalist movement’s bigotry, extremism, and corruption. Americans stood up for reproductive freedom, marriage equality, and constitutional rights. For so long, atheists have been called radical, dangerous, and un-American. Yesterday was a vindication. Millions of Americans stood alongside us in affirming the secular values we’ve championed for decades: freedom of thought and conscience, equality under the law, and a secular government that belongs to all of us regardless of belief or nonbelief. "
LGBT+ cultural magazine Them editorialised "$183 million on anti-trans advertising this cycle, largely with the goal of maintaining House and Senate control, and achieved neither. That is money down the drain. For several cycles now, as Them contributing editor Mathew Rodriguez wrote in an election night op-ed, the right has used trans people as a wedge issue with the aim of achieving broader goals, because our community makes for a convenient scapegoat. And on Tuesday, in astonishing fashion, that strategy absolutely ran out of juice. “Voters don’t want to litigate and re-litigate trans rights,” Rodriguez wrote, assessing the results. “They know that trans youth are not to blame for their pain at the pump or the grocery store register. They don’t have their finger on a switch that is downturning the economy. And they haven’t made $2 billion while sitting in the White House.”
Meanwhile, News is Out web feed said "New Hampshire Congressman Chris Pappas on Tuesday became the first openly gay man elected to the U.S. Senate.....Queer representation in the Illinois General Assembly expanded Tuesday as two openly LGBTQ+ candidates won seats in the state House, joining returning lawmakers as other queer candidates secured victories in races across Illinois. Gay state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) is headed to Capitol Hill, having made LGBTQ political history by becoming the first out congressmember elected from the Bay Area. He won his contest Tuesday to succeed retiring Congressmember Nancy Pelosi"
It seems clear that there will be much political analysis to come over the next few weeks as victorious LGBTQIA candidates review what many will hope is the impending end of far right politics in the States. Keep ahead of things by tuning to community radio services, reading the gay press and following LGBTQIA+ weblogs.
We're always keen to report on the breadth of gay media projects there are, particularly as it is so difficult to keep independent queer voices prominent. LGBT website PrideAid.com lists over 100 radio stations and more podcast projects aimed at...
