Tegan and Sara Muse on MTV's 40th Birthday

Tegan and Sara, the gay identifying twin musicians from Canada, were contibutors for a detailed and thoughtful document on the phenomenon on MTV on the occasion of the pop network's fortieth anniversary, and which was transmitted on Sky Arts in the UK. Tegan and Sara considered the enormous impact of pop music videos and television in the eighties and nineties, but also pointed out the contradictions, and the misogyny of some of the material that had been produced. Of MTV's gradual change into more of a conventional broadcaster, with reality themed television programmes, they were in praise of shows that had brought queer identities to a wider audience and challenged stigma over issues such as HIV and AIDS.
